Woodworking Taster Class. Saturday 31/01/2026 10am to 3pm.
Beginners. 5 hour day. £96.
Make a serving board. This class is an introduction to developing hand tool skills. We cover how to use a hand plane and a hand saw correctly. Talk about wood grain and how it affects the process of making. Then using a selection of carving and shaping tools we get to the final shape before applying a food safe finish to the board. At the end of the day you will have made a beautiful serving board ready to use.
All materials are included in the price.
These classes have a maximum of 5 places.
Beginners Taster Class Summary
In this class we make a serving board, turning a piece of rough sawn hardwood into a beautiful finished item.
Introduction
To start the day first off is a quick talk about the tools and timber you will be using.
Practice
Time to use some tools. Let's get hands on straight away and make some cuts on a practice piece.
Planing Our Board
On to our project. Use a hand plane to flatten the rough faces of our timber.
Sawing
Use a selection of hand saws to crosscut and ripsaw our timber.
Chisel Work
Use a chisel to shape the handle.
Final Shaping
Sand, scrape, plane to get our board ready to apply the finish.
Waxing And Round Up
Adding a food safe wax and oil finish to help protect our boards. A look at what we have achieved and how the techniques learned can be used further.
